ViceIce Logo Animation
2025

Logo animation for Vice, made with real ice.

I froze and chiseled many big blocks. I made perfect ice with no minerals but it didn’t look like ice on the scanner, so I went back to perfectly imperfect ice. I carved it into shapes and got my hands very cold many times.

A cool fact about ice is that it is still debated as to why ice is slippery (at least thats what wikipedia says).

I used various techniques to animate ice, including chiselling carving, and moulding the ice into shapes. Sometimes I would use my hands to melt the frames, or just time-lapse the ice normally melting.

Bread knife, ice carving knife, mallet, ice
Captured on scanner bed with an extra light to give the ice multiple colour
Silcone mould prepared with 3d-print of the logo
It was incredibly difficult melting the logo in-place. I had to perfectly level my scanner by trial and error, and redo the logo melt several times.
